NBCU-NABET-CWA Negotiations Bulletin #20

NBC AffairsNABET-CWA/NBCU Negotiations Bulletin #19 (.pdf 3/21/10)

We are demonstrating every Sunday at NBC Washington, Meet the Press.

NBCU Management sees our members standing up for justice and a fair contract.

Local 31 President Carl Mayers (l) and CWA District 2 Vice President Ron Collins (r)
stand with NBCU Members fighting for a fair contract.

We are demonstrating every Sunday at the NBC Washington Studios of Meet the Press. NBCU Management sees our members standing up for justice and a fair contract.

  • We have been bargaining with NBCU since the Fall of 2008.
  • Our contract expired in the Spring of 2009.
  • NBCU still has proposals that threaten our jobs and future.

 The Company's proposals include:

  • A radical change to our seniority system; which will endanger the livelihood of many long time employees.
  • NBCU has acted upon proposals that transfer NABET work to non-represented/non-NABET employees.
  • NBCU continues to reduce the NABET/CWA workforce, who are the most experienced and capable television production workers.

NBCU, and its corporate parent General Electric, are playing a new reality game with union employees and shareholders alike. The game is "Corporate Greed," and the goal is to make those who contribute to the success of the company into "The Biggest Losers," while senior executives and corporate board members line their own pockets.

In current negotiations with its workers, NBCU is pushing to change the 75 year relationship NABET-CWA has had with company. The contract expired on March 31 and union negotiators are working to reach a new agreement, but NBCU is insistent on making draconian changes. The quality of these jobs and associated benefits would be significantly reduced, and would greatly impact union workers in New York, Chicago, Burbank, and Washington, D.C. who have been loyal to the company throughout their careers.

Tell GE CEO Jeff Immelt and NBCU Chairman Jeff Zucker that NABET-CWA members deserve a fair contract at NBCU and that workers and shareholders will not be the "The Biggest Losers" at GE!

Cohen to Congress: Comcast Deal Would Hurt Workers, Consumers

CWA President Larry Cohen told a key House committee last week that the proposed $30 billion Comcast/NBC Universal merger would curtail jobs, limit investment in Internet build out and harm consumers.

Testifying before the House Judiciary Committee last Thursday, Cohen urged lawmakers and regulators to assess the merger in terms of jobs, the impact on competition and the likely negative effect on the emerging Internet video marketplace. In addition to possible action by Congress, regulators with the Department of Justice and FCC will review the merger to ensure consumers are protected and competition isn’t curbed.

Cohen was the only labor leader to testify last week; CWA plans a robust campaign against the proposed merger.

Cohen noted that the country still faces 10 percent unemployment and the proposed merger should be considered in the context of what it will mean for jobs. He noted that the deal would saddle the emerging company with $8 billion in new debt. “NBCU will be under pressure to cut jobs, raise prices or renege on that debt,” Cohen said. “There are no warranties, no guarantees for consumers, workers and communities. Companies make lots of commitments but don’t have to carry them out.”

This chart compares the increase in cable television rates for consumers
with the rise in the consumer price index. The proposed Comcast-NBCU
merger would be bad not just for workers but for consumers as well.

NBC Affairs NABET-CWA Members Protest at NBC Universal Gala

(DCLABOR 08-06-09): With talks still stalled four months after their contract expired, NABET-CWA members at NBC-Universal are turning up the heat and asking viewers in four major cities including Washington -- to turn off NBC and its local stations where members work. NABET 31, the DC-area local, is urging area union members and activists to sign cards pledging to "Turn Off NBC4" the cards are available from Local 31 negotiator Richard McDermott: rcki@msn.com or call 301-495-4999. "We have been working without a contract since March," McDermott tells Union City, and negotiations have bogged down. A higher level of mobilization is now necessary. The contract covers 2,500 workers; NBC is pushing to create a non-union job title for work that union members have been doing for decades. It also plans to close some operations in New York City and Burbank and transfer the work to a non-union facility in New Jersey.

NABET - CWA Local 31 is informationally picketing NBC/WRC Locations in The Washington, DC area. Picketing started on Sunday September 13, 2009 with the "Meet The Press" NBC Show at WRC/NBC in Washington, DC. There was a very good turnout of members.

Guests of the NBC Show have shown much interest in the problems between the Union and NBCU.

NBC still refuses to negotiate a fair and equitable contract with our members and their families. NBC and GE profits continue to rise from the backs of our members; yet, the Company is still trying to claim that there is a "real" lack of money.  It is interesting that the shareholders are not being told the same information by the Company.

Informational picketing will continue.
