NABET-CWA Reaches New Agreement to Cover ESPN Shows in Washington, D.C.

When ESPN's popular weekday programs, "Pardon the Interruption" and "Around the Horn", begin broadcasting in High-Definition in a few months, the studio and control room crews, editors, and other workers will be represented by NABET-CWA. This groundbreaking agreement came as the result of recent negotiations between the union and the company and will result in production for these shows being done at the ABC News Bureau in Washington, DC, which is being upgraded to HD. With these shows being in production 235 days out of the year, utilizing two separate crews, the result will be over 3700 "man days" of new NABET-CWA represented work being done at the bureau annually.
Sector President Jim Joyce commented on the addition of "Pardon the Interruption" and "Around the Horn" to the list of national television broadcasts covered by NABET-CWA agreements. "While the Sector already has an agreement covering ESPN productions airing on ABC, such as NASCAR races and NBA games, this deal is unique because it marks the first time that a NABET-CWA collective bargaining agreement will cover work airing exclusively on ESPN."
Both shows were previously produced at Atlantic Video, a non-union shop. "With the difficult challenges we are all seeing in the broadcasting industry, I welcome the opportunity for the new work these productions will provide for our members", stated NABET-CWA Local 31 President Carl Mayers. He continued, "With our members bringing their skills and talent to these shows, I am sure these productions will achieve new heights of success, and I thank Sector President Joyce for his hard work in securing this agreement for Local 31".
"Pardon the Interruption" and "Around the Horn" are expected to debut in HD on October 4, 2010, with rehearsals beginning at the ABC News Bureau in September.
